The Barts and The London Cancer Centre seeks excellence in patient care and cancer research.
We’re passionate about caring for our patients, and this website is designed to give you an insight into the care that we provide. Whether you’re visiting us for diagnosis or treatment and support, our team of specialists are here to support you.
Dr John G. Gibben
Professor Gribben joined Barts and The London in the Centre for Medical Oncology in October 2004 from Harvard Medical School. Within the centre, Professor Gribben leads the studies on immunological responses to leukaemia and lymphoma. The aim is to implement immunological treatments, including allogeneic transplantation, to improve the outcome for patients with haematological cancers. A particular interest is in understanding the molecular basis for alterations in immune cells in the tumour microenvironment and his group have recently identified changes in gene expression in T cells in patients with leukaemia. The multidisciplinary research program combines clinical strength in leukaemia and lymphomas with a dissection of immunologic responses against cancer, identification of tumour antigens as targets for this approach and exploitation of the graft versus leukaemia effect.
Within the Institute of Cancer, Professor Gribben leads the newly established Centre for Experimental Cancer Medicine. The main objective of the Centre is to provide a centre of excellence to facilitate translational cancer research from basic scientific discovery to the delivery of novel approaches to care of patients with cancer. Specifically, this Centre will build upon the strengths of the five existing basic science units within the Institute of Cancer at Barts and The London: Together the aims are
To conduct clinical trials to the highest ethical and scientific standards
To strengthen and expand the evidence base for the management of malignant disease
To improve patient care and improve access to novel clinical trials and innovative treatments for cancer
